O mundo do motociclismo tem, ainda bem, se adaptado cada vez mais a novos tempos. Apesar da mudan\u00e7a mais lenta do que gostar\u00edamos, uma das provas concretas do movimento \u00e9 a quantidade de mulheres pilotando e aumentando vertiginosamente um mercado que at\u00e9 h\u00e1 pouco tempo n\u00e3o falava com elas. E como n\u00e3o poderia deixar de ser, as mulheres tamb\u00e9m est\u00e3o se dedicando a tudo que envolve o que vai al\u00e9m das motocicletas. A atividade de customiza\u00e7\u00e3o e personaliza\u00e7\u00e3o de acess\u00f3rios, e at\u00e9 mesmo motos, j\u00e1 conta com o talento de muitas brasileiras. E uma destas artistas, no caso brasileira leg\u00edtima no que diz respeito a ascend\u00eancia, \u00e9 Stephanie Pelais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The world of motorcycling has, thankfully, adapted more and more to the new times. Despite the slower change than we would like, one of the concrete proofs of the movement is the number of women riding and rapidly increasing a market that until recently did not speak to them. And, of course, women are also dedicating themselves to everything that goes beyond motorcycles. The activity of customization and personalization of accessories, and even motorcycles, already has the talent of many Brazilians. And one of these artists, in this case a legitimate Brazilian with regard to ancestry, is Stephanie Pelais<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Nascida em Pirassununga (estado de S\u00e3o Paulo), Sthephanie foi criada por sua tia av\u00f3 vinda de uma fam\u00edlia de origem ind\u00edgena. Por conta disso, acabou n\u00e3o tendo contato com quase ningu\u00e9m de sua fam\u00edlia e teve uma vida dif\u00edcil como a maioria dos brasileiros. Por necessidade come\u00e7ou a trabalhar aos nove anos de idade e, por conta das dificuldades, nunca teve condi\u00e7\u00f5es e acesso ao ensino superior. Mesmo assim, quando menina, tinha o sonho de trabalhar com moda e vivia desenhando roupas.<\/p>\n

Born in Pirassununga (a small city in state of S\u00e3o Paulo), Sthephanie was raised by her great aunt and came from a family of indigenous descent<\/span>.<\/span> Because of this, he ended up not having contact with almost anyone in his family and had a difficult life like most Brazilians.<\/span> Out of necessity, he started working at the age of nine and, due to the difficulties, he never had conditions and access to higher education.<\/span> Even so, as a girl, she had a dream of working with fashion and spent part of her time designing clothes.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Em meio a isso tudo, sempre foi apaixonada por motocicletas e carros, principalmente os carros antigos, e sempre pensava em como poderia fazer parte, de alguma forma, deste universo. Em 2018 teve a oportunidade ficar por alguns dias no studio de de um amigo, L\u00e9o Dalla<\/strong><\/a>, um j\u00e1 proeminente artista no meio da cultura de customiza\u00e7\u00e3o. Na ocasi\u00e3o colocou na cabe\u00e7a que queria pintar um capacete que estava por l\u00e1. L\u00e9o explicou e ensinou algumas t\u00e9cnicas e forneceu o material. E assim nascia seu primeiro trabalho. Por conta de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o nas redes sociais, em pouco menos de uma semana, o primeiro trabalho acabou rendendo uma parceria com a My Helmet<\/strong><\/a> de Vila Velha (estado do Esp\u00edrito Santo). Parceria que ali\u00e1s dura at\u00e9 hoje. A criatividade acabou indo al\u00e9m dos capacetes e Sthephanie hoje tamb\u00e9m trabalha com pintura de motocicletas, quadros e t\u00eanis. But throughout her life she has always been passionate about motorcycles and cars, especially old cars, and she always thought about how she could be part, in some way, of this universe. In 2018 he had the opportunity to stay for a few days in the studio of a friend, L\u00e9o Dalla<\/strong><\/a>, an already prominent artist in the midst of the customization culture. At the time she put it in her head that she wanted to paint a helmet that was lying there. Leo explained and taught some techniques and provided the material. And so his first job was born. Due to exposure on social networks, in just under a week, the first job ended up yielding a partnership with My Helmet<\/strong><\/a> from Vila Velha (city in the state of Esp\u00edrito Santo). Partnership that lasts until today. Creativity ended up going beyond helmets and Sthephanie today also works with painting motorcycles, paintings and sneakers. Sendo assim, voc\u00ea tem algum tipo de forma\u00e7\u00e3o acad\u00eamica em arte ou \u00e9 de fato uma caracter\u00edstica do seu m\u00e9todo de trabalho?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

N\u00e3o tenho forma\u00e7\u00e3o acad\u00eamica. Mas sempre gostei e admirei tanto o trabalho de artistas not\u00f3rios quanto o de artistas e amigos mais pr\u00f3ximos. O pouco ensinamento t\u00e9cnico e te\u00f3rico que tive contato\u00a0 foi com meu amigo L\u00e9o Dalla quando comecei \u00e0 2 anos atr\u00e1s.<\/p>\n

Your work in addition to many times running away from the commonplace, has a very strong research characteristic. It has very well-defined artistic styles. So, do you have any kind of academic training in art or is it really a characteristic of your work method?<\/span><\/h5>\n

I have no academic background. But I have always liked and admired the work of notorious artists as well as the work of artists and close friends. The little technical and theoretical teaching I had contact with was my friend L\u00e9o Dalla when I started 2 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

O mundo da arte de capacetes, pelo menos por aqui, ainda sofre um pouco da falta de originalidade e da influ\u00eancia muito forte da escola norte americana. Muitos dos seus temas fogem disso e tem uma presen\u00e7a n\u00edtida de per\u00edodos acad\u00eamicos, etnias e culturas diferentes. Isso \u00e9 uma linha que voc\u00ea pretendeu seguir desde o inicio ou \u00e9 algo que surgiu ao longo do tempo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eu sempre procurei fazer algo que combinasse comigo, com minha ancestralidade e por eu realmente gostar muito dos temas que utilizo com mais frequ\u00eancia.<\/p>\n

The helmet art world, at least here in Brazil, still suffers a little from the lack of originality and the very strong influence of the North American school.<\/span> Many of your themes deviate from this and have a clear presence of different academic periods, ethnicities and cultures.<\/span> Is it a line that you intended to follow from the beginning or is it something that has emerged over time?<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

I always tried to do something that would suit me, that would match my ancestry and because I really like the themes that I use most often.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Seu trabalho volta e meia trata de temas ind\u00edgenas e o resultado \u00e9 super interessante, desde arte abor\u00edgene at\u00e9 nativos norte americanos. Teria um espacinho pra arte ind\u00edgena sul americana que tem coisas lind\u00edssimas? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Com certeza tem espa\u00e7o sim! Ali\u00e1s isso \u00e9 um foco atual. S\u00f3 n\u00e3o fiz ainda por falta de tempo.<\/p>\n

Your work very often deals with indigenous themes and the result is very interesting, from aboriginal art to North American native art.<\/span> Would there be some room for South American indigenous art wich have beautiful things?<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

For sure!<\/span> In fact, this is a current focus.<\/span> I just haven’t done it yet due to lack of time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Seu trabalho tamb\u00e9m utiliza muita padronagem. Tem arte grega, mandalas e texturas. Algumas coisas lembram muito os padr\u00f5es e vitrais de Antoni Gaudi (arquiteto catal\u00e3o). Isso tamb\u00e9m seria uma esp\u00e9cie de assinatura do seu trabalho? Conta pra gente.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gosto muito de padr\u00f5es vitrais e pretendo fazer mais daqui em diante. Mas acho que a t\u00e9cnica de envelhecimento (craquelado) junto \u00e0 arte ind\u00edgena \u00e9 com o que mais me identifico. Mas tamb\u00e9m gosto de fazer coisas diferentes e estamos sempre aprendendo. E a gente pode e deve mudar a toda hora n\u00e9?<\/p>\n

Your work also uses a lot of patterning.<\/span> It has Greek art, mandalas and textures.<\/span> Some things are very reminiscent of the patterns and stained glass windows of Antoni Gaudi (Catalan architect).<\/span> Would that also be a kind of signature of your work?<\/span> Tell us.<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

I really like stained glass patterns and I intend to do more from now on.<\/span> But I think that the aging technique (cracked) along with indigenous art is what I most identify with.<\/span> But I also like to do different things and we are always learning.<\/span> And we can and must change all the time, right?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Que tipo de t\u00e9cnicas voc\u00ea usa e quanto tempo em m\u00e9dia voc\u00ea leva pra finalizar seu trabalho desde a encomenda at\u00e9 a finaliza\u00e7\u00e3o?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eu tenho esta parceria de longa data com a My Helmet e s\u00e3o eles que me fornecem o casco liso para que eu possa trabalhar. Fa\u00e7o tudo a m\u00e3o com pincel, canetas de tinta acr\u00edlica e canetas de tinta permanente.\u00a0 O tempo de trabalho obviamente depende muito da complexidade da arte. Posso finalizar um trabalho em um dia ou em duas semanas. Uma vez pronta a arte eu envio de volta para a My Helmet onde elas aplicam o acabamento de verniz a e forra\u00e7\u00e3o. De qualquer forma, na m\u00e9dia, a maioria dos trabalhos eu acabo dando o prazo de um m\u00eas ou um pouco mais.<\/p>\n

What kind of techniques do you use and how long does it take on average to finish your job from ordering to completion?<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

I have this long-standing partnership with My Helmet and they are the ones who provide me with the clean external shell so I can start working.<\/span> I make everything by hand with brushes and pens.<\/span> The working time obviously depends a lot on the complexity of the art.<\/span> So, I can finish a job in a day or two weeks.<\/span> Once the art is ready I send it back to My Helmet where they apply the varnish finish and lining.<\/span> Anyway, on average, most jobs I end up setting a deadline of a month or a little longer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Como todo mundo tem de pagar as contas, voc\u00ea tamb\u00e9m faz o que a maioria do p\u00fablico motociclista gosta, os temas old school, as indefect\u00edveis caveiras, etc… Mas, aparentemente, voc\u00ea tenta fugir disso e tem a tend\u00eancia de se tornar uma artista autoral com suas caracter\u00edsticas e inspira\u00e7\u00f5es mais marcantes. Faz sentido isso ou voc\u00ea n\u00e3o v\u00ea problema algum em ser polivalente e atender a todo tipo de encomenda?<\/h5>\n

Eu realmente preciso pagar minhas contas! Mas sempre tento, na medida do poss\u00edvel, fugir do “tradicional” que \u00e9 uma coisa que, querendo ou n\u00e3o, muita gente j\u00e1 faz. E gosto de fazer coisas diferentes. Mas claro, acabo fazendo o tradicional por que trabalho \u00e9 trabalho e n\u00e3o d\u00e1 pra fazer s\u00f3 o que se gosta. Acabo n\u00e3o divulgando tudo que fa\u00e7o e, se fizer e aquilo n\u00e3o tenha muita rela\u00e7\u00e3o com meu estilo, acabo n\u00e3o assinando. O que no fundo \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m uma maneira de tentar me ater a tarefa paralela de desenvolver um estilo e um trabalho autoral, que tenha a minha cara e que as pessoas me reconhe\u00e7am por isso.<\/p>\n

As everyone has to pay the bills, you also do what most of the motorcycling people likes, the old school themes, the indefectible skulls, etc … But, apparently, you try to escape from that and you tend to become a kind of authorial artist with your most striking characteristics and inspirations. Does this make sense or do you see no problem with being multipurpose and fulfilling all types of orders?<\/span><\/h5>\n

I really need to pay my bills! But I always try, as far as possible, to escape the “traditional”, which is something that, like it or not, many people already do. And I like to do different things. But of course, I end up doing the usual an regular work because work is work and you can’t just do what you like. I end up not showing everything I do and, if I do and it doesn’t have much to do with my style, I not signing. Basically it is also a way of trying to stick to the task of developing a style and an authorial work, which has my own style and that people recognize me for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tenho uma vida simples, sem fam\u00edlia e sem filhos. Por conta disso, ao menos nestas condi\u00e7\u00f5es, consigo viver do meu trabalho. Mas confesso que vejo muitos artistas por a\u00ed que lutam pra sobreviver, principalmente quando t\u00eam uma fam\u00edlia para sustentar. No Brasil \u00e9 complicado viver de arte. Aqui arte n\u00e3o \u00e9 valorizada como em outros pa\u00edses.<\/p>\n

Speaking of paying bills, is helmet art your main activity today?<\/span> Can you make a living from it here in Brazil?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

I have a simple life, with no family and no children.<\/span> Because of that, at least in these conditions, I manage to make a living from my work.<\/span> But I confess that I see many artists out there who struggle to survive, especially when they have a family to support.<\/span> In Brazil it is complicated to live doing art.<\/span> Art is not valued here as in other countries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Quais s\u00e3o as maiores dificuldades com seu trabalho? E quais as maiores alegrias?<\/h5>\n

Olha, a \u00fanica dificuldade ainda \u00e9 um certo preconceito.\u00a0 Por ser mulher. J\u00e1 passei por alguns momentos bem desagrad\u00e1veis por conta disso. Mas acredito que o tempo mude isso. J\u00e1 minha maior
maior \u00e9 que, nesse universo do trabalho, acabo conhecendo muita gente maravilhosa e fa\u00e7o grandes amizades. Isso \u00e9 gratificante.<\/p>\n

What are the biggest challenges in your work?<\/span> And what are the greatest joys?<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

Look, the only difficulty is still a certain prejudice.<\/span> For being a woman.<\/span> I’ve been through some pretty unpleasant moments because of that.<\/span> But I believe as time goes by that will change.<\/span> On the other hand, my greatest joy is that I end up meeting a lot of wonderful people and making great friends.<\/span> This is gratifying.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Nossa! L\u00e9o Dalla assim como foi meu primeiro mentor \u00e9 minha maior inspira\u00e7\u00e3o! Um mestre e amigo que me ensinou os primeiros passos.
Eu acabo seguindo muitos artistas de fora nas redes sociais. Mas \u00e9 tudo muito diferente do que escolho pra mim. Quando comecei a fazer arte acabei me inspirando em uma t\u00e9cnica de patina (nota: t\u00e9cnica para dar um aspecto envelhecido) de um italiano chamado Gaetano Sole. \u00c9 a t\u00e9cnica que mais testei e mais utilizo hoje em dia.<\/p>\n

Do you have any references and inspiration?<\/span> Artists both here and abroad?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

Wow!<\/span> L\u00e9o Dalla as well as being my first mentor is my biggest inspiration!<\/span> A master and friend who taught me the first steps.<\/span>
I end up following many foreign artists on social media.<\/span> But everything is very different from what I choose for me.<\/span> When I started making art I ended up being inspired by a patina technique (note: technique to give an aged aspect) by an Italian artist called Gaetano Sole.<\/span> It is the technique that I have tested and used the most today.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Que conselho ou dica voc\u00ea daria pra quem quer come\u00e7ar nessa \u00e1rea e provavelmente se profissionalizar? O que \u00e9 importante estudar, planejar, etc?<\/h5>\n

Quando se tem vontade e se gosta do que faz\u00a0 tudo fica mais f\u00e1cil. Meu conselho \u00e9 estudar, fazer algum curso relacionado e correr atr\u00e1s. E que n\u00e3o hajam limites para a arte! Tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 preciso paci\u00eancia e persist\u00eancia pois no come\u00e7o os bons resultados n\u00e3o aparecem da noite para o dia.<\/p>\n

What advice or tip would you give to anyone who wants to start in this area and probably become a professional? What is important to study, plan, etc.?<\/span><\/h5>\n

When you have will and you like what you do everything gets easier. My advice is to study, take a related course and go for it. And have in mind that there are no limits for art! It also takes patience and persistence because in the beginning the good results do not appear overnight.<\/span><\/p>\n

E depois de se estabelecer nesse ramo, teria uma dica pra quem j\u00e1 esta nele e quer ter um diferencial?<\/h5>\n

Saia do clich\u00ea e do lugar comum. N\u00e3o importa se voc\u00ea cozinha ,costura, customiza, fotografa ou sei l\u00e1 eu o que. A arte esta em tudo e, portanto, fa\u00e7a diferente e bem feito. Isso est\u00e1 em cada um. \u00c9 a chamada criatividade.<\/p>\n

And after settling in that acticivty would you have a tip for those who are already in it and want to have a competitive advantage?<\/span><\/h5>\n

Get out of the clich\u00e9 and the commonplace. It doesn’t matter if you cook, sew, customize, photograph or whatever. Art is in everything and, therefore, make it different and well done. It is the so called creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n
